What to Do in Santo Antônio, Santa Cruz Cabrália, and the Surrounding Area

Udexere Eco House is surrounded by some of the most special landscapes of the Discovery Coast, in southern Bahia. Beaches, rivers, coral reefs, natural pools, mangroves, Atlantic Forest, and small communities are all part of the experiences you can discover during your stay.

We have selected some of the main tours and attractions near Santo Antônio and Santa Cruz Cabrália for you to enjoy the region at your own pace and learn more about its nature, history, and culture.

  • Coroa Vermelha

Located in Santa Cruz Cabrália, Coroa Vermelha combines beach, history, and Indigenous culture in one of the best-known destinations on the Discovery Coast.

The region is directly connected to the arrival of the Portuguese expedition led by Pedro Álvares Cabral in 1500 and to the celebration of the first mass in Brazilian territory.

Coroa Vermelha is also home to an important Pataxó community, where visitors can learn more about Indigenous culture and explore local handicraft areas featuring traditionally produced pieces.

In addition to its historical and cultural importance, Coroa Vermelha Beach is known for its calm waters and natural pools formed during low tide.

  • Natural pools and coral reefs

The coastline in this region is home to beautiful coral formations and natural pools, which are especially visible during low tide.

With clear, calm waters, these environments are ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and observing fish, crustaceans, and other forms of marine life.

Among the most interesting formations in the area are Coroa Alta and Araripe, each offering a distinctly different experience.

  • Coroa Alta

Coroa Alta is one of the best-known coral formations in Santa Cruz Cabrália and one of the region's traditional excursions.

Tours generally depart from Santa Cruz Cabrália aboard schooners that initially travel along the João de Tiba River, passing through mangrove areas before reaching the sandbank and natural pools formed during low tide.

Depending on the itinerary, the tour may include other stops throughout the day.

As visiting conditions depend on the tide and weather, we recommend checking tour schedules and availability in advance.

Araripe: a more secluded experience

For those who prefer a quieter and more authentic experience, Araripe is a special alternative.

Smaller and less well-known than Coroa Alta, the reef offers a more intimate experience amid the region's waters.

Udexere can assist guests in getting in touch with local fishermen who make the journey in small boats, departing from a location near the property.

Upon reaching Araripe, you can enjoy the natural pools and explore the coral formation before heading back.

The tour depends on sea conditions, tides, weather, and the availability of local fishermen. Prices and schedules should be confirmed during your stay.

  • Jequitinhonha River Tour: From Belmonte to Canavieiras

For those who want to explore beyond the beaches, a journey along the Jequitinhonha River reveals a different side of the Discovery Coast's landscape.

The route begins in Belmonte, a historic town located north of Udexere, and continues by boat through mangrove landscapes, Atlantic Forest, and areas associated with the traditional cocoa production of southern Bahia.

Along the way, the scenery alternates between stretches of river, preserved vegetation, and small communities.

One of the highlights of the journey is the Barra do Peso region, where the river meets the sea, creating an almost untouched landscape.

Some itineraries also pass by Ilha das Graças, known for its traditional mud bath, before continuing toward Canavieiras.

  • Canavieiras and the History of Cocoa

Upon arriving in Canavieiras, it is worth setting aside some time to explore its historic center.

The architecture preserves part of the area's history from the period when cocoa production brought great prosperity to the region. Historic mansions, quiet streets, and the town's atmosphere help tell the story of this important chapter in the history of southern Bahia.

This is a longer excursion and is recommended for those who want to dedicate a full day to discovering landscapes, history, and culture beyond the immediate surroundings of the property.
